My Favorite Etsy Shops

Just before the holidays, I went to the Renegade Craft Fair in San Francisco and was in love with all of the great designers and crafters that I met. There are some seriously talented folks out there. So here are a few of my favorite Etsy shops that I recently discovered.

HOMAKO
Adorable fabric and felt necklaces. Her style is very Anthropologie without the hefty price tag.

FINCH DESIGNS
Comfortable yet sexy clothes. I bought a blue and yellow dress, a black t-shirt, and a teal custom-made top. All of them are so nicely designed and seriously comfortable.

RAEDUNN
Simple, beautiful pottery. Something you would see in Real Simple magazine. Stunning, really.

GLASS CATHEDRALS
Lisa Swerling is an artist who makes the coolest diorama-type art. You just have to see it to understand. So click on her website and be prepared to be amazed.

JENJEWELRY
I love jewelry. I can’t get enough. Her jewelry is so exquisite. You can tell that it takes time to make these pieces.

Why shop handmade? 1. You’re supporting an artist. 2. You’re getting a quality handmade item, not some manufactured piece. 3. You get something unique.

I can’t tell you how much I love artists and their work. What are some of your favorite Etsy shops? Please share. So you can feed my addiction to all things handmade.

Opening My Own Etsy Shop

After months of planning I finally opened my Etsy.com shop, Typecraft. My friend Beth who I interviewed about her Esty shop, BShorr Handmade, helped push me along to finally opening it. I was scared about opening it, delaying it each month, because it seemed so hard to do. But Beth urged me on (and several other friends) and here it is today!

I love making handmade goods for my friends so I was inspired to name the pieces in my collection after my friends and family. Here are few pieces from the collection and the stories behind them. Thank you to all my friends & family for their support! It means a lot to me.

I love all things Japanese and so does my friend David Licata. I’ve made him some Japanese notebooks, seen here on his blog, from a calendar that we both used to adore at our old job where we first met. David’s a filmmaker, writer, and Prince fan, and when I was creating this bracelet, I knew I had to name it after him.

I’ve known Alina, aka Ling, since my freshman year at NYU when we lived on the 3rd floor of Rubin Hall. She has always loved sushi so when I was creating this necklace, the dangling pink beads reminded me of salmon roe eggs, one of Alina’s favorites. She is one of my biggest fans and I am honored to call her my friend.

I have never met my friend Rita Floréz. Seriously. We “met” during an online magazine writing class in 2007 and we kept in touch, and we both have successfully sold pitches for magazines since then. When she told me that she was moving from the humidity of Miami to the cold winters of Missouri, I immediately sat down and knitted up this pink scarf for her to keep her warm. She vouches for its cozy warmth!

Opening Your Etsy Shop: A Q&A with BShorr Handmade Designs

I first met Beth Shorr through my now-husband Brendan who worked with Beth at The Daily Show (yes, that daily show). Beth and I bonded over our love of crafts, particularly knitting. She opened up her Etsy shop in 2007 and has been making cute handmade knits and crochetted items ever since.

As I’m about to launch my own Etsy shop, I thought it would be great to get Beth’s insight into her 3-year-old shop.

Beth and I are also currently featured in Vickie Howell’s book Craft Corps: Celebrating the Creative Community One Story at a Time. It’s out in bookstores now in the craft section. The book features pro crafters like Amy Butler, Jay McCarroll, Mark Montano, as well as 60 everyday crafters. Check out Beth on pg. 197 and my profile on pg. 233!

Special thanks to Beth for answering my questions. Be sure to visit her Etsy shop, Bshorr Handmade Designs.
Q: How did you get started with opening your Etsy shop?
A: I began knitting and crocheting after graduating college. I made many gifts for my friends over the years and finally listened to them in 2007 when they encouraged me to open up a shop!

Q: What were some challenges in setting up the shop?
A: Etsy is a wonderful place with many talented artists so the hardest part is making yourself visible. It’s still a challenge! I try to tag my items well and relist often. I also joined a couple of teams, which has proven to be helpful.

Q: What are some of your favorite handmade pieces that you’ve made?
A: I think of all of my items as my babies, but currently I’ve been very pleased with my pillowcase tunics. They are fun to make, it’s more freeform than any of my other items so each one is unique.

Q: Who are some of your favorite crafters out there?
A: I love all people who craft, but I think Martha Stewart is probably my favorite. It may sound cliche, but I heart her—she’s so fantastic and can do pretty much anything!

Q: How do you advertise your Etsy shop, bshorr handmade designs?
A: I don’t do any official advertising per se, it’s mostly word-of-mouth. I also use Facebook to help get the word out.

Q: How long does it take you to make your items?
A: It varies. This is not my full-time job, so I usually don’t sit down and make one piece from start to finish. I work on my bshorr stuff at night, once I’m home from my day-job. My hats usually take about 6-8 hours in total to finish, the scarflettes take around 6 hours as well. The pillowcase tunics are quicker, probably around 4 hours. My cozies are the quickest, since it only takes me a couple of hours to finish one of those.

Q: Have you sold at craft fairs? If so, how did it go?
A: I’ve sold at 2 craft fairs so far – the holiday handmade cavalcade produced by the NY Etsy Street Team, The {NewNew}. This is a event that the team produces from start to finish and both of my experiences were really great. I’ve noticed my things sell better in person, maybe it has something to do with people being able to touch the items and can experience first-hand how nice they feel!

Q: What are your favorite Etsy shops?
A: I have many favorite Etsy shops, but a few include Lingua Nigra, May Luk Ceramics and Supayana.

Q: What was your very first craft project?
A: My first craft project was a finger-knitted yarmulke I made for my dad in 3rd grade.

Q: Your five favorite craft items you can’t live without.
A: Knitting needles, crochet hooks, yarn, scissors, and a ruler or measuring tape.

Typecraft Picks of the Week: Jewelry

Beautiful Beaded Necklace from Lemon Grove

Each week, I’ll post of my very best picks of all things crafty, whether it’s jewelry, cooking, writing, new blogs, or just a great new thing you have to check out.  I hope you’ll love what I’ve found.

I love handmade jewelry.  Handmade Galleries and Esty.com are my top choices for finding great handmade jewelry.  At the LA Bust Craftacular event back in December, I bought some lovely new items from the following vendors.  Feast your eyes on these bad boys!

Lemon Grove Jewelry

A gorgeous beaded chain link necklace — simply elegant and stunning.  What I love about their pieces is the fact that they are so intricate yet beautiful.  Bookmark their Etsy shop on your Etsy favorites.

The Weekend Store

I bought my friend Susan a great Christmas present from The Weekend Store.  Susan is from Peru and there was a darling necklace with a cutout from a vintage map with the country of Peru under glass.  I’ve previously bought their typewriter necklace.  I used to write on a little eggshell blue typewriter as a kid so it was perfect to have a typewriter key with my intial.

Scarlett Glass

She molds perfect shapes of glass with animals, leaves, birds, even octopi on them.  Delicate, simple, amazing shades of glass.  For your friends who like glass jewelry, send them to her site.
